“Go placidly amid the noise and haste….” Desiderata – Max Ehrmann
Such a simple statement, such a difficult thing to do! There is, it seems, much “noise and haste” these days, but I suppose it has always has and always will seem so, making the “amid the noise and haste” superfluous. Still, it serves as a reminder to occasionally retreat (mentally or physically) from the hubbub and take a deep breath. In this I am reminded of the song, Up On The Roof:
“When this old world starts to getting me down, and people are just too much for me to face, I climb way up to the top of the stairs, and all my cares just drift, right into space….
Let me tell you now, when I come home feelin’ tired and beat, I go up where the air is fresh and sweet.
I get far away from the hustling crowds, and all that rat race noise down in the street”
Heck, it makes things better just listening to The Drifters, James Taylor, or Carole King talk about it.
“Go placidly amid the noise and haste.”
